“Cómo se dice...?” is one of the first phrases I could say when I was learning Spanish, that and “Where is the restroom?”
It is one of those sayings that you could use at any point in a conversation to see how you say something which always came in handy.
Well, the “How do you say...?” restaurant has made its way to Kings Harbor and is open for everyone to enjoy Mexican food that is different than other “south of the border” restaurants.
As usual when I sat down in the restaurant, I was greeted with chips and salsa. But this time it was different; there was a green salsa accompanying the usual red salsa and it tasted like some kind of fruit (more on that later.)
The red salsa had a fresh, roasted taste and I immediately wanted to pour it on all of my chips and devour it in one bite but I decided to keep my lady-like manners and slowly enjoy my chips and salsa.
As my lunch partner and I scoured over the menu, trying to decide what to get, we decided to get two menu items and share them so we could get an idea of two dishes that were marked “Chef’s recommendation.”
We started our meal with the shrimp avocado mango tower ($14) which is served with chips. The avocado/guacamole was intersected with a combination of shrimp and melons. The taste was unique but I have to say, my favorite part was the two shrimp on top, mixed with the guacamole dip on a chip.
Between the dramatic glass art, the unique wallpaper and the mix between classic Hispanic movie posters and items you would find at street vendors in Mexico, the atmosphere was inviting and very art-deco.
We shared the beso camarones ($16), or shrimp wrapped with jalapenos, cheese and bacon, and the fish tacos ($12) which were filled with lightly fried tilapia covered with a special Baja sauce.
Now back to the green sauce, the bacon-wrapped shrimp tasted delicious dipped in the green mixture but to tell you the truth, I am still not sure what it was.
I asked for flour tortillas instead of the regular corn tortillas because I do not like them, but the tacos were delicious and light. Most of my co-workers grimaced at the thought of fish tacos, but they were delicious and are definitely on my “that’s what I am getting next time” list.
Just when I thought I had eaten enough, the temptation of dessert was unbearable and we both ordered the key lime pie ($6.)
The delectable pie was drizzled with a green lime sauce and it truly was almost too pretty to eat, but I devoured that slice before it could even know what hit it.
All in all, Cómo se Dice is a pleasant, fresh surprise to the basic Mexican food restaurants that populate the area.
I cannot wait till the next time I go when I can sit out on the patio, enjoy more fish tacos and have a cold margarita ($8) in hand while enjoying the sun set over the river; want to join?
